Use fresh DRAM chips for soldered upgrades.
Fresh chips. Reusing donor chips is not worth the risk.
When you’re soldering BGA DRAM onto a board — laptop, console, whatever — you’re trusting those chips to work perfectly. A cold joint or internal short kills the whole board. Fresh chips come from the factory with virgin solder balls and known testing. Donor chips? They’ve been through reflow once already, maybe twice if you desolder them badly. That thermal stress can cause microcracks or delamination you can’t see.
Plus, donor chips are often pulled from dead boards. You have no idea why that board died. Could be a bad chip. Could be a board fault — but you’re now transplanting chips that survived a failure. Not a great gamble.
I’ve done this. Reused chips work sometimes. But when they fail, you waste hours troubleshooting and reballing. Fresh chips cost more, but they remove a whole layer of uncertainty.
Future you will thank you for not cheaping out on the one part that can brick the whole repair.
