Professional soldered RAM upgrades typically run $150–$300, sometimes more depending on the shop and the laptop model. That’s because it’s delicate microsoldering work — desoldering the old chips, cleaning pads, reballing, and attaching new ones. And there’s real risk: one slip and you’ve got a dead motherboard.

For that money, you could have bought a laptop with more RAM from the start, or sold your current one and put the cash toward a better model. The performance gain from, say, 8GB to 16GB is noticeable, but the upgrade cost often exceeds the price difference between those two configurations new.

I’d only consider it if you already own a high-end machine that’s otherwise perfect (think a premium ultrabook you love), and the upgrade cost is less than replacing it. For a mid-range laptop? Just buy the right spec next time.
