Unless you have experience with microsoldering, don’t try it.

The tools alone will set you back a couple hundred bucks: a hot air rework station with precise temperature control, a soldering iron with a fine tip, flux, solder wick, solder paste, and a stencil for reballing the new BGA chip. You’ll also need a preheater or a hot plate to stop the board from warping. And that’s before you buy the RAM chip itself, which you better source from a known-good donor board or reputable supplier.

The skill floor is high. You’re removing a tiny BGA (ball grid array) component with dozens of solder balls underneath, cleaning pads without lifting them, applying fresh balls or paste, and aligning the chip perfectly under a microscope — all while not overheating adjacent components. One slip and you’ve killed the motherboard. Even experienced techs fail sometimes.

If you’ve never practiced on scrap boards or done BGA rework before, this isn’t where you start. Stick to laptops with socketed RAM.
