Yes. The board’s total memory limit is set by the CPU’s memory controller and the BIOS, not just the number of physical slots. Soldered RAM counts toward that limit—so if your board supports 32GB total, and 8GB is soldered, the empty slot can only take up to 24GB. You can’t just keep adding sticks past that ceiling.
Most consumer laptops with soldered RAM have a hard cap. The BIOS won’t even boot if you exceed it. And even if the chipset could theoretically handle more, the manufacturer often locks it in firmware. So that empty slot isn’t a free upgrade path—it’s a fixed maximum.
Check your specific model’s specs. If the total supported RAM is, say, 16GB, and you’ve got 8GB soldered, the slot is only good for another 8GB. Don’t assume the slot will let you double the soldered amount.
Manufacturers don’t always advertise this clearly, but it’s a common limitation.
