The theory is sound — fewer signal reflections, shorter traces, no socket impedance. In practice, the gain is microscopic, if it exists at all. Modern DDR4 and DDR5 memory controllers handle socketed connections just fine. The bottleneck for overclocking is almost always thermals, voltage regulation, and the memory controller’s own limits, not the last inch of trace.
Soldered RAM usually comes in laptops or low-end compact systems where thermal headroom is terrible and the BIOS offers no tuning. You can’t swap modules for better bins, and you can’t add heatsinks. So even if the electrical path were slightly cleaner, you’d never get to use it.
Stick with replaceable RAM if you want to push timings. You can actually buy sticks rated for tight timings and give them proper cooling.
Soldered RAM is a convenience for manufacturers, not a gift to overclockers.
