The electrical trace length difference between soldered and socketed RAM is so small it doesn’t matter in practice. We’re talking millimeters versus a few extra centimeters through a connector. The signal travels at roughly half the speed of light—the delay is negligible, far below the timing margins of any modern memory controller.
The real speed limits come from the RAM chips themselves (DDR generations, timings, frequency) and the memory controller’s capabilities. A socketed DDR5 module will run at the exact same speed as a soldered one with the same specs. The connector adds a tiny bit of capacitance and resistance, but it’s designed into the system—engineers account for it.
What soldered RAM does buy you is thinner laptops and lower manufacturing cost for the brand. The downside: you can’t upgrade or replace it if one chip fails. So don’t let the “shorter traces” myth trick you into thinking it’s faster. It’s a tradeoff for repairability, not performance.
Pick a laptop based on the RAM amount and speed, not whether it’s soldered. Future You will thank you when a DIMM slot lets you pop in more memory later.
