Soldered RAM doesn't break Linux—but it might trap you.

It doesn’t affect compatibility at all. Linux treats soldered RAM the same as a DIMM. Drivers don’t care how the memory is attached. You’ll run PostgreSQL, MySQL, or any database just fine on soldered RAM—assuming you have enough of it.

The real problem is that you can’t add more later. Memory-hungry workloads like databases are the exact reason people want upgradeable laptops. A machine with 8GB soldered and no slot is a paperweight for serious database work. 16GB might be okay for light development. 32GB or more? You’re buying a new laptop.

So solder isn’t a Linux issue. It’s a future-you issue. If you know you’ll need to scale up memory, avoid soldered-only machines. Get something with at least one DIMM slot, or buy more RAM than you think you’ll ever need upfront.

Future you will thank you for getting a stick you can swap.
