Skip the BGA rework – it's not a weekend project.

Don’t do it. You need a BGA rework station (heating from top and bottom), stencils, solder balls, flux, tacking tape, tweezers, and probably a microscope. Even then, success rate is sketchy without practice.

The bare minimum setup that won’t destroy your board is about $400–$600 for a cheap Chinese rework station. Add stencils ($15–$30 each), solder balls ($10–$20), flux ($10), and a decent microscope ($100–$200). You’re looking at $600–$900 before you melt your first chip. And that’s the cheap stuff – a proper station like a Hakko or Weller runs $1,500–$3,000.

Plus, you’ll destroy a few boards learning. If you’re fixing one laptop, buy a replacement motherboard for $100–$200 and swap it. Faster, cheaper, and you keep your sanity.
