Modern ultrabooks use BGA (ball grid array) packages. That means the RAM chip has solder balls underneath, invisible, and you need a hot air rework station with precise temperature control, flux, and a preheater. Even then, you’re working on a multi-layer board with tiny vias and traces that can lift or crack if the heat profile is wrong.
One mistake — too hot, too long, misalignment — and you’ve killed the motherboard. I’ve seen experienced technicians brick boards doing this. It’s not like swapping a desktop DIMM.
If you’re asking what skill level, you’re probably not at that level. That’s not gatekeeping; it’s reality. Start with cheaper practice boards, learn with scrap electronics. When you can reliably remove and replace BGA parts without destroying the board, you’re ready. Until then, leave this to shops with proper equipment and insurance.
