Reballing RAM on modern ultrabooks is a long shot.
Not very common, and failure rates are high — think 30–50% or even worse depending on the shop and laptop model. Reliable stats are hard to come by because nobody publishes them, but anecdotal evidence from repair forums suggests it’s a gamble.
Modern ultrabooks use BGA (ball grid array) soldered RAM directly on the board. Replacing it means desoldering the old chip, cleaning the pads, and soldering a new one — all while not damaging nearby components or the motherboard layers. Heat management is critical; too much and the board delaminates. Too little and you get cold joints. Plus, the BIOS and memory training often need tweaking, and many third-party shops skip that step.
Even if the reball “takes,” the laptop might boot but crash under load, or the new RAM may not be properly recognized. Compatibility with the CPU’s memory controller and the board’s power delivery is iffy. You’re essentially asking someone to MacGyver a component the manufacturer never intended to be replaced.
If you need more RAM, buy the configuration with it from the start. Resoldering is for data recovery or very specific repairs, not a practical upgrade path.
