ReadyBoost was designed for a world of slow mechanical hard drives. It uses a USB drive as a cache to speed up disk reads. That’s it. It doesn’t give your computer more RAM or prevent the system from running out of memory.

If you’re low on soldered RAM, your laptop will still thrash when it runs out — swapping data to the page file on the SSD. ReadyBoost can’t help with that. In fact, with a modern SSD, ReadyBoost often does nothing at all because the SSD is already faster than the USB cache.

The real fix is buying a laptop with enough RAM from the start. Soldered RAM is a cheap manufacturer trick, not a feature you should work around. If you’re stuck with 8GB and can’t upgrade, ReadyBoost is a waste of a USB slot.

This is not where creative software saves bad hardware.
