The MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK pushes past 6666 MHz

The MSI MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK was one of the early Z690 boards on the market, and its 6666+ MHz DDR5 ceiling was respectable for its launch window. The “+” in the spec sheet is doing some work — it’s MSI’s way of saying “this is the tested minimum, and you can go higher with the right kit.”

This board was released during the transition from DDR4 to DDR5, so its memory support reflects that early-adopter moment. Z690 boards from this era varied wildly in their DDR5 overclocking capability, and the TOMAHAWK landed in the upper middle of the pack. Standard JEDEC speeds work without drama, and the board handles XMP profiles from most DDR5 kits without issue.

In practice, with a good set of DDR5 modules and some BIOS tuning, you can push past 7000 MHz on this board. The 6666+ rating is a conservative floor.
