The NUC 8 Bean Canyon's rear panel is sparse — one USB-A and one HDMI

The rear of the NUC 8 Bean Canyon is remarkably sparse: one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A, one HDMI 2.0a, one Gigabit Ethernet, and the power jack. That’s it.

This makes sense when you remember that Intel designed the Bean Canyon with the expectation that you’d use the front Thunderbolt 3 port for a dock. With a single TB3 dock, you get Ethernet, USB hub, display outputs, and charging — all through the front panel. The rear becomes a clean break for just the essentials.

It’s a different philosophy from Lenovo’s ThinkCentre approach, where the rear panel carries the bulk of the connectivity. Intel bet on the dock ecosystem, and the Bean Canyon’s I/O layout reflects that bet.
