Rainy days are a license to be lazy.
Yes, but it takes a mindset shift and a tiny bit of prep.
The biggest enemy is expectation. You planned to climb that ridge, paddle that lake, make miles. Now you’re in a damp nylon bubble with nothing but the sound of rain on the fly. Fighting that disappointment is what wears you out, not the boredom itself.
So surrender. A rainy tent day is a rare thing: an enforced pause with no guilt. Read that paperback you shoved in the bottom of your pack. Nap without alarm. Journal the dumbest thoughts. Play cards even if it’s solitaire. Make up a ridiculous story about the guy in the tent next to you. The key is to lean into the downtime, not resent it.
Bring one analog thing that you actually enjoy—a deck of cards, a puzzle book, a notebook. Don’t plan to “be productive.” Just be. Boredom only wins when you keep wishing you were somewhere else.
Future you, rested and dry, will thank you.
