Pick the American side for hiking and quiet views.

Definitely the American side.

The Canadian side is a tourist carnival — massive crowds, casinos, chain restaurants, and a strip of hotels. It’s where you go for the iconic view of Horseshoe Falls and a cheap steak dinner. It is not where you go for a quiet hike.

The American side has Niagara Falls State Park, which is older, less developed, and way more natural. The trails along the Niagara Gorge — like the Niagara Gorge Trail, Devil’s Hole Trail, and Whirlpool State Park — give you real hiking with actual elevation changes, rock scrambles, and views of the river and rapids that are just as impressive as the falls themselves. You’ll see a fraction of the tourists, especially if you go midweek or early morning.

The trade-off: you don’t get the straight-on view of the Horseshoe Falls from the American side as easily. But you can walk across the Rainbow Bridge in ten minutes for that. Then go back to the quiet side.

The Canadian side is better if you want the postcard photo and a Ferris wheel. The American side is better if you want to actually enjoy the falls.
