Mixing soldered and SO-DIMM RAM sometimes works for dual-channel.

It depends on your laptop and the sizes involved. If the soldered memory and the SO-DIMM you add are the same capacity (e.g., both 8GB) and speed, most modern Intel and AMD laptops will run them in dual-channel mode. That’s the good scenario.

Here’s where it gets tricky: if the capacities are different—say 8GB soldered and you add a 16GB stick—you won’t get full dual-channel. Instead, the system uses flex mode. The first 8GB of each stick runs dual-channel (total 16GB in dual), and the remaining 8GB of the 16GB stick runs in single-channel. Performance is still better than all single-channel, but not as good as matched pairs. Some older or budget laptops might just fall back to single-channel entirely.

The platform matters too. Intel’s Flex Memory and AMD’s similar asymmetric dual-channel support this kind of mixed config, but not all BIOS implementations handle it well. A few laptops lock you into single-channel the moment you touch the slot.

Before you buy, check your laptop’s manual or look for forum posts from other owners. If you can match the soldered capacity (e.g., 8GB + 8GB), you’ll likely get full dual-channel. If you can’t match, you’ll still get a decent boost over single-channel, just not the maximum.
