Measure the gap before buying low-profile RAM

Low-profile RAM is usually about 18-20mm tall, while standard sticks are around 31mm. If your free slot is jammed right next to soldered chips, even low-profile might not clear the heat spreaders or nearby components. I’ve seen cases where the solder bumps themselves protrude enough to block a standard module, but a low-profile one just barely fits.

The real answer: measure the distance from the slot to the nearest obstruction. If you have at least 20mm of vertical space (or the low-profile spec of your chosen RAM), you’re fine. If it’s less than that, you might need to go with even shorter “VLP” (very low profile) sticks, which are harder to find and usually run at lower speeds.

Also, check if the soldered chips are actually the problem. Sometimes the interference is from the heatsink or the chassis frame, not the chips themselves. A quick visual inspection with a ruler beats guessing every time.

Don’t force anything. RAM slots aren’t meant to be flexed.
