LPCAMM2 is easy to spot if you look.

Most laptops still use soldered RAM or traditional SODIMMs. LPCAMM2 is a weird middle child you’ll only find in a few recent business laptops (ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11/12, some Dell Latitudes). Here’s how you tell the difference without guessing.

Look at the physical shape. Soldered RAM is just chips on the motherboard—flat black squares, no module. LPCAMM2 looks like a skinny, rectangular card that sits flat against the board, connected by a tiny edge connector. It’s not a stick you insert at an angle like SODIMM. It’s more like a very thin M.2 drive, but wider and longer.

Check the connector. If you see a small, narrow slot with a single row of gold pins (about 10–15mm long) near the edge of the module, that’s LPCAMM2. Soldered RAM has no removable connector—the chips are literally glued and soldered to the board.

Try moving it. If a RAM chip wiggles or lifts off, it’s not soldered. But don’t actually pry—just look. LPCAMM2 modules are held by a tiny screw or clip. If you see a screw holding down a rectangular board, that’s your answer.

When in doubt, search the exact laptop model + “RAM upgrade” or “service manual.” That will tell you instantly. Laptop makers love to hide soldered RAM under a metal shield, so don’t trust just a visual peek.

If you don’t see a removable module, assume it’s soldered. Most laptops under $1500 are soldered these days.
