Producer Jimmy Miller, who had also worked on Beggars Banquet, recorded at Olympic Studios in London using a Helios mixing console and an out-of-tune piano, capturing the raw sound of the room rather than polishing it. Charlie Watts’s minimalist drumming — refusing to play any fill he didn’t absolutely need — defined the album’s rhythmic feel.
