Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew' was built from tape splices, not live takes

Miles gave his musicians almost no direction on Bitches Brew — just a tempo, a few chords, or a feeling. Producer Teo Macero then assembled the album through extensive tape splicing and looping. This cut-and-paste approach was revolutionary for 1969 and anticipated sampling by decades.
