Beethoven answered his own question on the last quartet

On the final movement of his last string quartet, Beethoven wrote ‘Muß es sein?’ (‘Must it be?’) and answered ‘Es muß sein!’ (‘It must be!’). The exchange became the musical motto that opens the finale.
