Prince built Sign o' the Times' drum sounds from the Linn LM-1 and Fairlight CMI

Many of the drum sounds on Sign o’ the Times came from the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Prince used the Fairlight CMI synthesizer to replace other instruments. The result is one of the best-sounding drum albums of the 1980s — all machine, all soul.
