"Sheets of sound" — the phrase coined for Coltrane in the Soultrane liner notes

Critic Ira Gitler coined the term “sheets of sound” in the liner notes for Coltrane’s Soultrane to describe his late-1950s playing style. The phrase stuck so hard it’s still used to describe Coltrane’s approach decades later.
