Tom Waits’ debut Closing Time was mildly received at best — it didn’t chart and got almost no attention from the press internationally. Hard to believe now, given that it holds “Ol’ 55” and the aching title track, but Waits hadn’t yet become the gravel-voiced cult icon we know today.
