Joanna Newsom gave Alela Diane her first public gigs

Joanna Newsom, also from Nevada City, invited Alela Diane to make her first solo public appearances. After playing with local band Black Bear, Diane launched a solo career that landed The Pirate’s Gospel as Rough Trade Shops’ Album of the Year.
