Keep your car camping kitchen simple: here's what a family of four actually needs

You don’t need much. But here’s the stuff that actually matters for four people eating three meals a day out of the back of a car.

Get a two-burner propane stove. The Coleman classic is fine. Don’t overthink it. Bring one extra fuel canister per trip. You’ll use more than you think.

One big pot (soup, pasta, boiling water), one skillet (eggs, pancakes, burgers), one small pot for coffee or oatmeal. A cutting board. A sharp knife. A pair of tongs. A spatula. That’s your cooking kit.

Storage-wise: a 70–100 quart cooler with decent ice management (rotate ice, keep it shaded) and a dry bin for shelf-stable stuff. A mesh dish basin, biodegradable soap, and a scrub brush. A washable tablecloth for your camp table. Garbage bags.

Serving: four plates, four bowls, four cups, four sets of utensils. Metal or melamine – paper plates get blown away. One big coffee mug for the person who needs it. One cooking spoon. One ladle.

That’s it. Everything else is a luxury. You’re car camping, not catering a wedding.
