A big difference.

An experienced person who does board work regularly can knock out a soldered RAM upgrade in 20 to 40 minutes from disassembly to reassembly. That includes prepping the chip, applying flux, hot air removal of old RAM, cleaning pads, placing and aligning the new chip, reflowing, and a quick continuity check.

For a beginner, same job will run 2 to 4 hours, and that’s assuming nothing goes wrong. The first few times you’ll fight with alignment, overheat the board, or bridge pins that are stupidly close together. You’ll also spend extra time cleaning and reworking mistakes. Most first-timers I’ve seen don’t finish under three hours, and some never get it working.

The real difference isn’t just time — it’s success rate. Experienced people fix problems fast. Beginners chase ghosts.
