Don't try soldering RAM on a Ryzen laptop.
Not worth it. Even if you have the tools and skill, the Infinity Fabric and memory training make it a nightmare.
The big issue is that Ryzen’s Infinity Fabric clock ties directly to memory speed. If you slap in a mismatched or slower module, the whole system can get unstable. Memory training happens on every boot, and on soldered RAM the motherboard’s training algorithm may fail if the new chip’s timings aren’t exactly what the board expects. You’re not just swapping a stick – you’re asking the BIOS to re-negotiate a complex dance with no room for error.
Also, soldering BGA RAM is hard. One cold joint and you’ve got random crashes. Even if you pull it off, the laptop’s firmware may reject the upgrade entirely because soldered RAM is often “locked” to the board’s SPD or security fuse. You can’t just desolder and solder – some OEMs (Lenovo, HP, Dell) tie memory authentication to the mainboard.
If you really need more RAM, buy a laptop with socketed memory or one that ships with the capacity you need. The soldered upgrade path is a trap.
