A Kaby Lake laptop (7th-gen) is already six or seven years old. Even if you find a shop willing to desolder and resolder RAM — which is rare and risky — you’re looking at $150–$300 for what? A slightly less cramped browser? The memory controller on that CPU tops out at DDR4-2400, so you’re not unlocking some hidden speed boost.

The real problem is that CPU itself is the bottleneck now. A modern budget laptop with a 12th-gen i3 will run circles around it for less than the cost of the upgrade plus the laptop you already have. Soldered RAM upgrades on old machines are a nostalgia project, not a practical investment.

That money is better saved for a machine that doesn’t need a soldered fix.
