DIY soldered RAM upgrades usually fail

Don’t do it yourself.

The failure rate for DIY soldered RAM (BGA rework) is probably north of 50% for first-timers — and I’m being generous. Hot air stations without preheaters lift pads. Misaligned chips bridge pins. Cheap flux causes cold joints. It’s not like plugging in a DIMM.

Professional shops with reflow ovens, stencils, and X-ray inspection see failure rates under 5%. But even then, you’re paying $100–$200 for a job that might still brick the board if the controller isn’t compatible.

This is not where you save a few bucks. If the laptop doesn’t support socketed RAM, buy it with the RAM you need from the start.
