If you’re thinking about desoldering the existing RAM and soldering on a higher-capacity chip, the hardware itself usually needs a few resistors moved – or added – to tell the motherboard what kind of memory is now installed.

Most laptops with soldered RAM use what’s called “memory configuration straps” – literally tiny resistors that tell the BIOS the density, rank, and organization of the installed chips. Pop in a 16GB chip where an 8GB one lived, and the board won’t know what to do with it without those strap changes. Sometimes it’s just moving one resistor; sometimes it’s adding or removing a handful.

Even then, it’s not guaranteed. The chipset and BIOS also need to support that configuration. Some boards have a fixed memory map that won’t budge. And if you get the resistor values wrong, the machine either won’t boot or will see glitchy, unstable RAM.

This is not a beginner mod. You need schematics, a hot-air station, good soldering skills, and the patience to trace out the resistor network. Many repair shops won’t touch it. If you’re asking this question, you’re likely better off buying a device that already has the RAM you need.
