A RAM disk won't fix low soldered RAM.
No, it’s actually counterproductive. If you’re running low on RAM—like 8GB soldered on a MacBook—carving out a chunk for a RAM disk makes things worse, not better.
A RAM disk uses system memory to create a fake drive. You lose that memory for actual programs. So instead of having 8GB of RAM, you now have, say, 6GB of RAM plus a fast virtual disk. Your apps will swap more, and the whole machine slows down. It’s like bleeding yourself to donate blood.
RAM disks are useful when you have excess RAM—like 32GB or 64GB—and want to put temporary files (caches, game assets) in a lightning‑fast location. On a low‑RAM system, the OS already uses available memory for file caching. You don’t need to micromanage that.
If you’re stuck with soldered RAM, spend your time closing background apps and browser tabs instead of setting up ImDisk. That’ll do more for performance than any RAM disk.
RAM disks are for people who have too much memory, not too little.
