A big power bank beats solar for most campers

For most campers, a large power bank is the most effective way to charge electronics off-grid.

Solar panels sound great in theory, but in practice they’re finicky. You need direct sunlight, a clear spot, and time. Clouds, tree cover, or just setting up camp in the shade kills your charge. A 20,000 mAh power bank costs less, weighs less, and works in your tent, the car, or a rainstorm. Charge it before you leave and you’re set for a long weekend with phones, earbuds, and a Kindle.

For longer trips (a week or more) or bigger gear like a laptop, a portable power station (like a Jackery or Goal Zero) makes sense. Pair it with a foldable solar panel, but treat the solar as a bonus, not your main plan. Far more reliable to top off the station at a coffee shop or ranger station.

I’ve seen people haul around 50-watt panels and still end up with dead phones. Do the math: a phone battery is about 5,000 mAh. A 20k power bank gives you four full charges. That’s plenty.
